Nicholas County High School started a Gay Straight Alliance club, otherwise known as GSA. The club promotes the acceptance of diverse individuals and creates unity among the NCHS student body. Mrs. Long, head advisor of GSA, explains the club is a safe place for people to go no matter their sexuality. Studies show that schools with a GSA organization have experienced many benefits, including lower suicide rates.
Ms. Straughan, an advisor and member of GSA, believes the club holds many beautiful features. “We accept and appreciate one another, and it’s okay for students to be themselves.” Member Gracie Davis stated, “I like the club; it gives us a sense of good community whether you are gay or straight.”
There are a total ten members currently in the club, and they meet on Wednesdays in Mrs. Long’s room during second breakfast. The club participates in many activities and will continue to encourage students to not be ashamed of their identities.
