Harper McClung: Basically a Genius

“She’s the cutest baby ever and basically a genius,” joked Selby McClung, proud mother of Harper Jane. Harper met the world about two-and-a-half years ago on January 15, 2017, making her a young Capricorn. Ever since that fateful day, Harper hasn’t stopped growing and learning.

Harper Jane McClung is named after the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. “The book had such a big impact on my life,” stated Mrs. McClung. She recalled that she first read the novel in the sixth grade. Harper’s middle name, Jane, comes from another literary classic, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Jane also happens to be the name of Harper’s grandmother.

When asked to choose between the toddler and baby stages, Mrs. McClung replied with a bit of wisdom, “Mrs. Ashby once told me, ‘Every stage is the best stage,’ which is totally true. Every stage of her development has been my favorite. Watching her grow and change is amazing. I’m so proud of her.” In regards to the difference between having a baby and having a toddler, Mrs. McClung said, “I kind of get a little sleep now. Her language has developed so much; she is very vocal.”

While her mom is at work, Harper spends three days a week with her nanny and two with her dad. When asked to put how much she misses Harper on a scale of one to ten, Mrs. McClung stated that it was “Definitely a ten. I miss her a ton, though I do value having an hour of free time.” While some kids are more of a momma’s boy or daddy’s girl, it really depends on the day with Harper Jane, who tends to fancy whomever she’s been with most of the day.

Harper loves to sing and make music. Mr. Hypes’ wife, Amy, teaches her. One of her favorite songs to sing is “Love is an Open Door” from Disney’s Frozen. She especially loves to duet with other people. Harper also really enjoys swimming, which she got to do a lot of this summer. “We hiked a lot, spent time at the lake, and went to the beach. Harper is an outdoor kid for sure,” said Mrs. McClung. Harper is very stand-offish and shy but only towards people she doesn’t know.

While Harper isn’t a fan of broccoli, she does love to eat spaghetti, mac and cheese, and all kinds of pasta. She also enjoys some vanilla ice cream with sprinkles on occasion.
