NCHS Drama Competition

By Garrett Wilson and Hayley Harvey

On February 17, 2018, four schools including our drama department competed in the Tamarack’s annual Theatre Association Area 5 Festival. Students and their chaperones left NCHS at 8:30 a.m. and arrived back at 6:00 that evening. The chaperones were Mrs.McClung, Mr. Morriston, and Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams was also entrusted with transporting the set to the competition.
Mrs. Mcclung’s drama class performed a scene from “The Nerd” by Larry Shue, and Eammon Payton won the All Conference Cast Award.
The competition was judged by Dr. Jay Malarcher who is an Associate Professor at West Virginia University along with Dr. Karen Vuranch Of Concord University.
Junior Jacob Tallamy, who played Axel Hammond said, “We were all pretty stressed out because we had to crunch to get things right. The stage was unfamiliar, and we lost a vital prop a few minutes before we had to go on, but everyone pulled their own weight. The cooperation was amazing, and it was a true bonding day. I’ll always consider the drama kids as my family.”
Charity Propps, a senior, who played the role of Tansy McGinnis said, “The competition was nerve racking, but we gave it our all and pulled through.”
Although the NCHS drama department didn’t place, it was an experience to remember.
